"But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon
you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all
Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."(Acts
1:8)
"Witnesses". When Luke wrote the book of "Acts", he set the stage for
the book with this verse. This wonderful book, given to us by the Holy
Spirit, gives us a first hand look at the ministries of the men and
women of God at that time. The word witness is a very strong word. It
refers to those of us that desire to see the world come to know Jesus.
It refers to someone that tells a friend about Jesus in the check-out
line at the department store in your hometown, as well as someone that
dies the death of a martyr for the cause of Christ. The Greek word for
witness in this verse IS martyr. "He that findeth his life shall lose
it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it."(Matthew
10:39)
I know that it's shocking but every hour of every day 20 people are
killed because they believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of Jehovah
God!! I have personally preached, in public, to thousands of people in
areas that kill Christians. It's amazing to see people that hungry for
God in spite of the risk that it will expose them to, yet they still
come to hear the Word of God. You do not have to visit such places to
be a witness for Jesus, not everyone is called to do so. I would
strongly advise you not to go to these areas unless you know God has
told you to go!! You can be a witness at work, on vacation, while
grocery shopping and in every place your daily routine takes you. Every
minute of every day, 267 babies are born and 108 people die, so we are
growing at a rate of 159 people per minute. We have exceeded 7 billion
and they need to hear the gospel of the Jesus Christ and His Kingdom!!!
The key to being a successful witness is found in the verse that we are
writing about today, "But ye shall receive Power". The Power that Luke
refers to in Acts 1:8 comes from the Holy Ghost coming upon you!! You
may say, "Bro Scott, How do I get the Holy Ghost to "come upon" me? As
always the Bible answers our questions, "Blessed are they which do
hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be
filled."(Matthew 5:6) Please become empowered by the Holy Ghost, go
forth and be a witness for Jesus, the world needs your light!!
